FIRST HEAT RACE WIN!!! Well, Sully finally pulled a low number that positioned me on the front row of the heat. Wow! it is a lot easier to stay up front than it is to get there:) I was able to win the Heat and start on the pole of the Feature. Thanks to FTZRacing for expediting some replacement exhaust primaries for me. The motor sounded great and ran just as good!
The Feature did not go as well as planned though. The track stayed sticky all night and developed some deep ruts. Although we made adjustments, it was not enough. With a severe under steer, I did my best to adjust but really found myself just trying not to turn the car over. Then before we could finish the race I stripped the rear drive gear after bouncing through ruts in turn four. We had fun in our heat race though:)

It has been tough to go racing the past few weeks! The temperature has been almost unbearable. It takes real dedication from your team to come to the track and help out when it is as hot as it has been. Special Thanks to everyone who supports our race program;)
Saturday night was just like the past four Saturday nights. Its been hot, I've been drawing high numbers and starting at the back. It is very difficult to get to the front from the back, especially in this winged 600 class. Everybody is pretty fast during the heat race when the track is sticky and fast. So with only six laps to pass eight cars I run out of time very quickly. I normally get about four to five cars on the starts, however every start over the past few weeks has been called back and restarted. So, of course the second start is always harder than the first. (people try not to make mistakes twice) This leaves me fighting for position while the leaders drive away. (Scottie waves bye bye to the leaders)
Never fear! We still have the Feature, which gives me twenty laps to pass twenty four cars for a win! Wouldn't that be exciting! I have not been able to get it done yet. more to come, I have work to go do.

Special thanks to everyone who came out to support me on Saturday! Racing can be very difficult and expensive, it really lifts my spirit to have some interest and support from my friends.
Thanks
Sprint cars were back at Cowtown Saturday night! Wow they are fun to watch! We all got a good show when the leader of one of the heats got put into the wall and turned over directly in front of the pit grand stands. It looked like it was and expensive night for that guy. Along with the standard wing, wheel, and front end damage, I think there was chassis damge also? Unfortunate.
Our night started out great. I had the best car I have had. We were working to make the car turn better on a heavy track, and I think we we have it almost perfect. Just a couple more adjustments will put the car were we need it to be. I started second row inside and ran second in the third heat. This put us on the grid third row outside for the A main.
This was definitly a change in pace from the past three or four weeks. So with a good start position I intended to at least run top five. It didn't work out though. I immediatly backed up after taking the green. I got knocked sideways coming off of two when I slid up into a car, and then almost spun trying to hold the car down in turn one a few laps later. I ended up running thirteenth. Lesson learned... Sprint cars will dry out the track but will leave the surface smooth. Thus full dry slick setup will be necessary. (Which we did not do last Saturday) If modifieds are going to run before us then they will rut and groove the track giving the little winged 600 a nice "Cushion" to rail around. In this situation we need forward bit but side bit is not so important. So we will try again in a couple weeks.

Last Saturday was full of surprises! We showed up at the track to find out that we were having a "Special" race and we would be running wingless. I pulled the wings off the car and made some necessary chassis setup changes. I ran third in the Heat, but then got DQ'd for being six pounds to light. This put me to the back of the B main. I used several laps learning the car and trying differant lines around the track. I finally settled down and learned the car had to stay low. I mean LOW! If the inside tractor tire didn't get my attention coming off the corner then I was not low enough! I was moving forward when two cars got together and came to a stand still in the iddle of turn one and two. I slowed and adjusted my line to pass them on the low side unfortunatly they moved down the track and I slid into them. I ended up turning the car over in a slow motion tip over. OOOPs! I'll fix it and be back July 5th.

After another long Saturday at Texas Driving Experience Jerry and I headed to the dirt track. I drew a forty five out of the bucket and started the third heat race on the third row outside. The car was fast but the #3 car in front of me was not. As we started the race he was not only late and slow he randomly lifted out of the gas as we were building speed down the front straight! I had already had to check up for him once and was not ready for it, so he lifted and I didn't. I drove over his RR and spun down around his nose and then scraped down the left side of his car backwards. I guess I could say I drove circles around him:) However, this did not work out well. I spun and had two other cars drive over me. Damage was not that bad, but the carbs. were knocked of by a car that ended up parking on my left kick rail. The race was over for me so Jerry and I proceeded to borrow a part and repair the car. The starter was locked up from rolling backwards so we put the carbs back on and pulled the starter gear out of the motor so we could just push start it.
ASCS sprint cars were in town and took precedent at the track so my A-main was not until the very end of the show that night, and the track had gone completely dry. We made the appropriate changes to the chassis and went out for the main. The car felt really good. We had been working on learning the little car since we had bought it and we are starting to really understand how to accomplish the results we desire. So, with a clean start the race was underway and I worked my way forward. After losing to spots due to a caution and bad scoring I found myself stuck behind a slower car. I used up a full six laps working my way past him and at the same time lost sight of the next position. I ended up finishing the race in thirteenth position. Although the night night did not go as well as we would have liked Jerry and I still felt like we had made good progress on the chassis setup so all in all felt good about the night of racing. We will be back strong in two weeks.

Saturday reminded us all that summer is coming! After the clouds burned off we were left with 95 degree temperatures and about the same humidity. The atmosphere was muggy making it almost hard to breathe. The day started with a great Texas Driving Experience SKILLS school at Texas Motor Speedway. I had a full day of instructing on various training courses with some really fun girls from Mineral Wells and Argyle. They learned a lot so I would definitely call it a successful day. As soon as the SKILLS course ended I was meet the race rig in the parking lot to head to Cowtown for a night of winged 600 racing.
The race night began with a mediocre draw of 32. This put us third row outside in the first heat. I had a great start and found myself running third entering turn one. This was looking real good however I wasn't gaining on the two cars ahead of me. I found the car was rolling onto the right rear a bit to much. On a heavy race track in a sprint car this can be a pretty interesting chassis movement. It can do a couple things. One is real simple, the car rolls over! Well I didn't do that but I did find myself on two wheels at the center of turn one and two at some point in the race. The second movement the car can make is slightly complex. As the car rolls to the right it pins the right rear tire making it stick causing the car to have a understeer condition. Then what happens is the power of the engine pulls the front tires of the ground and the car gyrates around the right rear tire and points the whole car back to the right. So now the car has pointed itself off the track, a condition that is the most severe understeer possible. Basically, I've already turned the car and then it rares up and decides to go a different direction. This is just about how my experience with horse riding has gone. So I just stay off horses, fortunately I can fix the car. Anyways, the heat race went well and I finished third regardless of the tight race car. Unfortunately, I was five pounds under weight and got disqualified.
This leaves us at the back of the twenty car Feature. Between races the track dried out getting slippery and developing some pretty deep ruts in turn three and four. I took the green with a somewhat conservative thought process and decided the bottom was the place to go entering turn one. I slowly picked off a few cars and worked my way up to eleventh place where I finished. The evening went well with no incidents. We definitely look forward to next week so can make some changes and learn more about our new race car.

Friday night at Boyd was the first winged 600 race at Boyd this year. Our friends at Texas Driving Experience came out for the first time which made for good company and extra fun. There was some confusion all night. The track officials were not sure what to do with us when we showed up but every one was very friendly and created a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, only about ten cars showed for the event. We rented transponders and were excited about it because timing and scoring can always be questionable and local dirt tracks. There was a problem with the transponders in the heat races though and officials decided to have us draw for starting positions in the main event. This turned out to be a good thing for the Evans team because we pulled the front row outside position. All the moisture rested on the bottom groove of the track so for the start we had a slight disadvantage. I held Kyle in the #04 car low and on one of the three starts we had a slight altercation that knocked him into the infield momentarily. No big deal. The race was finally on and I slipped back to third. It wouldn't be long though before I was making a move for second. However, I didn't get it done before I got a bit over zealous with the brakes and spun to the inside. I kept it moving got a gear and pulled on to the track in fourth and then reclaimed my third position. And that is pretty much the end of Friday night. We finished third and headed to the house.

Saturday was a blast! After playing paint ball all day I hopped in the big truck and headed to meet Mark at Cowtown. About half way there I lost a right side trailer tire and needed to pull over to pull the tread out of the fender well to get it to stop smoking, and then back on the road to the races. The track was super heavy and my car needed some major chassis adjustment from last night at Boyd. After a bad draw we started at the back of the second heat and made very little headway towards getting to the front. The car was too tight to drive and some inconsistent pretty much out of control cars made it very difficult to pass. This put us mid field in the B-main. This can be very scary place to be, because things get expensive very quickly back there. We made some adjustments for the B and put the car back into position to move forward. I made it up to fourth and finished the race unscathed. The A-main came quickly so after a few more changes to the car the lined up toward the back of the feature. The car felt great and we were moving forward rapidly. With multiple crashes and restarts I was able to pick off some cars at the very beginning of the race. Once things settled down slightly I started working on individual cars. This was going well until the car directly in front of me broke in turn three and I slammed my left front tire into the back of him. Well, that sucked cause it knocked the toe way out on the car adversely effecting the drivability of the car. So, from then on out we maintained position but was unable to run down any more cars to pass. I did however get a little schooling from the #87 car of Aaron Reitzel a Stallard factory sponsored driver. Aaron is a really nice kid that has been racing for about 12 yrs. (and it shows) Even on a dry track he will flat foot the track and get the car to turn and go! So, that was fun. we talked after the race and I went home with what timing and scoring said was a tenth place finish?

Cowtown Speedway (3rd Night)
Track:Heat-heavy; Feature-Heavy

With two races behind us we showed up to the track feeling relaxed and ready to race. The weather was overcast and had a lot of moisture in the air. Scattered showers had blown through earlier in the day and were possible later in the night. We started the first heat race second row inside. We were pretty fast finishing third after miscalculating a pass for second and having to turn right to avoid driving over the top of the car I was overtaking. This would qualify us to start third row inside of the feature.
The feature was even better track conditions than the heat race. The track maintain moisture all night and was tacky from the top all the way to the bottom. Unfortunately, we decided to make some changes to the car that slowed us down. I started the race and immediately backed up. While this was irritating and disappointing at the same time it was not as bad as what happened next. Eight laps into the race the chain snapped on the exit of turn two. I immediately moved right and left the track. OK, so this is not that bad, but it still costs money and leaves an incomplete feeling for the next to weeks until we can get back to the track.
Sunday, took me to Motorsports Ranch in Cresson, TX. Mark and Rusty were running go-kart around the road course. The racing was super tight with multiple lead changes every lap! Mark ended up second overall after one win, a second, and then ending the day with a third place finish. Thanks to Rusty for his hospitality and congrats on some good racing to Mark!

"First Race of the Season"
The Set Up
Right out of the shop Jerry commented things felt right. The brakes were great and the front end of the toter were much better. Yes, the transporter was dialed in. With exception of a low left rear and 4.00 per gallon for motion lotion, the toter and trailer performed well for the season opener.
The Heat Race (Scott's comments)
"Heat race started fine. I was spending time getting to understand how the car worked. At the same time i was feeling out different racing line on the track. Unfortunately I was a bit too focused on the track and did not see two cars in front of me get together on the high side of turn one. When they caught my eye I had already closed on them and ended up driving over the left rear of Sonny Miller's grandson. This broke a RF trailing arm and a steering rod."
In the Pits
Mark and Jerry quickly got to wrenching on the car and got it back together after straightening the steering rod and borrowing a trailing arm, thanks to Sonny Miller. Editor's note: you have to love auto racing, your driver crashes into the competition and the competition then lends your team a part to get your driver back out on the track
